You get what you pay for... Magic hard Drives...

I got this bit of news that certain Chinese dealers in Russia were selling 500GB portables drives at a very low price.  It was packed in a legitimate looking hard drive enclosure:

The guys who bought the drive were ecstatic to buy such a large capacity drive at such a bargain price... well here's where the saying "You get what you pay for" comes in... when they tried it out at home... they copied a 700mb movie into it and tried to play it back.  But whatever size of the movie and how many times they copied it, it only seems to play the last 5 minutes of the movie file.  The rest was missing.  So they had it checked out at a Computer repair shop... When the computer guys heard what was wrong, they opened the hard drive in front of them... and this is what they found:

It seems the hard drive contained a 128mb flash drive which was configured to rewrite itself from the beginning whenever it got full! SO, that's why it was only playing the last 5 minutes of any file movie they copied.  Apparently, it was an ongoing scam and a lot of people were already duped which was why the guys at the repair shop was familiar with the problem.

Those Chinese dealers were tricky bastards!  The repair guys don't even know how they configured the flash drive to do that rewrite loop.  They must have messed with the flash drives board to do that.  Anyway, let's hope this doesn't get to the Philippines... 'coz that would really suck... just to be safe, buy only from reliable dealers.
